New Motivation
Dec 3rd, 2009 at 8:21pm

I don't know how others feel but I can say for myself that acquiring the new table/arm/cartridge has certainly increased the amount of time I have spent listening to music. I don't think it is just the thrill of a 'new toy'; to me it seems it is more about how much more alive the music sounds and how it makes me feel.

At one of the sessions at Clive's place where he was gifting us with his cast-off LPs, I questioned him about why he was shedding the particular albums he was. Pardon me Clive if how I paraphrase isn't what you actually meant, but what I got out of it was that you had sucked all of the music energy out of those disks and they didn't thrill you any more. I can't say that that hasn't happened to me, but it does not occur to me very often. Once I got past the "gota listen to these first" group of albums and realized just how gripping and involving the sound had become, I started to pull out the LPs that were approaching the point that Clive described. After just a few cuts off the first LP, I knew that I wasn't going to suffer the same malady that beset him. Of course, I didn't spend a lot of time continuing pursuing that thread - that would be too pre-planned a listening pattern, and I am much too spontaneous a listener to do that.

At this point, I'm not sure where I wanted to go with this but it is hard to concentrate with my foot tapping, head bobbing and my cheeks hurting from smiling. My internal music batteries are getting fully charged and some long offline mental and emotional systems are coming online with a roar! Life is to be lived!!

And Clive, You ain't getting your LPs back when you get your new table!

That's a nice post, squiddy!

It's been so long since I got to tuck into a nice bunch of analog listening sessions on a great system that by the time I get me new rig all up and running, everything old will be new again as far as my vinyl collection goes!   And as for the ones that are still sealed...  Cheesy

Squid and Raggy, you both echoed by own "predicament" exactly. I'm all aboard the vinyl resurgence express.

I just received my Incognito (rewired) Michell RB250 arm and getting it set up to "tweak in" an Ortofon Black 2M cartridge. My current Incognito/RB300 arm has an AT OC9MKII on it now. With the Tecnodec/Belles combo, I can easily change out entire arm/cartridge combinations and do either MC or MM with a flick of a button.

Forch,

have you ever considered getting a table that you could have at least two arms mounted on?  I think that if I could go back just about four months ago, I would have ordered my new table configured for just such a thing. Maybe even three arms!  The reasoning for that would be:

1) my table can spin at 78 rpm and I have a cartridge with stylus specifically for 78s. My Old Man left me his early record collect and it contains a lot of very early jazz and the like. I have a Dual CS-5000 that is used for 78 play but that means having to have another table set up and taking space. With a table with two arms on it, that problem is somewhat solved.

2) it would really be nice to be able to compare two different arms or cartridges without all of the extra work of mounting and swapping. If your arm accepts different headshells, well that is a different story, but mine doesn't.

Anyway, keep us posted as to how your setup pleases you.

Raggy,

your mention of sealed LPs prompted me to check out what I have hidden away. There are at least 35-40 that aren't replacement copies for favorite thing I already have.  Time to get cranking on those puppies too.

The Exclusive Co had a sale a couple weekends ago where everything vinyl was 25% off.  They are also purchasing used vinyl too. I hauled everything down there I had in my cull pile, that Amazing Records didn't want, and took credit (15% more than cash). Picked up several 180 & 200 g pressings to replace more pedestrian copies I had. AND, while there, after Tom, the mgr, finished selecting what he wanted from my pile, another customer came up, saw what was happening, and HE purchase about half of what was left at $1 a pop. Way to clean house!

Squiddy, I got the cartridge on my arm, installed it, and playing a few albums. Got some tweaking to do, but really minor. It is sounding very good and the cartridge (and even more so the new arm wires) only have minimum time on them. Got to keep spinning to break it in. I'll follow up after everything settles in. Yo!
