MEETING IN DE
PERE MAY 29th 2005
Thanks to all who were able to attend the meeting on
Sunday.
Our thoughts were with Doc, who's recovering from a
short stint in hospital. Hope everything is going well
Doc, it wasn't the same without you. It
was quite a good turn-out given that it was a Holiday
weekend, and I think most of us were in the mood to
kick back and unwind with a brat and a beer or two. Highlights
- Paul took on the role of chief brat flipper and
Wilbur managed to squeeze a 4 hour nap into a 6 hour
meeting!....it's no wonder he always looks so fresh
and rested! A Brit won the Nascar, and we had a time
with Greg's best cheesecake creation to date. I'd been
up most of the previous night dealing with some
lunatic who drove his truck into a ditch at 3.00 am,
so I was a little below par but managed to keep up
with everyone other than Paul! Raggy
treated us to some interesting sounds that stretched
my poor little Maggie's to the limit, and Paul brought
a CD that made me think of how Kate Bush might sound
with her foot in a bear trap. I
managed to bore everyone with a few tracks from Jah
Wobble, who if nothing else looks like the kinda guy
you could enjoy a pint with! We
had a short chat about PC audio and listened to a few
tracks on an entry-level PC based system, which in
fairness hadn't really been optimized, given it's
setup just a day before the meeting. Using a USB
Wireless adaptor and streaming tracks off the PC
hard-drive through an Apple Airport Express into the
Audio Alchemy digital interface, we were able to get a
feel for what might be available from this format and
I suspect given what can be achieved for $200, there's
a good future ahead for PC based high-end audio. We
had the Pear Cable on hand, kindly loaned to us by
Adam Blake at www.pearcable.com
- A 1.0m single-ended cable utilizing gold conductors
and what appears to be excellent build quality. With
perhaps only 50 or 60 hrs it sounded very open and
extended with a nice detailed midrange. More to follow
on this cable when we get it through the 200hr mark. We
also had a Chris VenHaus Pulsar digital, but again,
only a few hours on it from new. And
so, it was good to be together on the Holiday weekend
with yoo's guy's - a very enjoyable time indeed.
